The sixth package of EU sanctions to the Russian Federation and Belarus

We hereby set out the highlights related to the sixth package of sanctions issued on June 3rd 2022, by the Council of the European Union against the Russian Federation and Belarus:

  • Ban on the purchase, import and transfer of oil and other petroleum products of Russian origin. The ban is considered to be gradually imposed, therefore, there will be the cessation of imports within 6 months for crude oil and within 8 months for refined products. Some exemptions are provided for member states that are most dependent on Russian supplies and have no alternatives;
  • expansion of the list of Russian and Belarusian credit institutions excluded from the SWIFT system;
  • expansion of the list of goods whose export is prohibited, including 80 new chemicals that could potentially be used in the production of chemical weapons;
  • expansion of the list of Russian and Belarusian natural and legal persons variously affected by the restrictions;
  • restrictions on the provision of specific services to Russia (accounting, consulting, IT) and restriction of certain Russian radio and television stations responsible for promoting pro-Russian propaganda.
